Interview with Bruce Kim

First memory being introduced/interested into fashion/the industry?

Korea is more sensitive about fashion than Vancouver. Growing up there, I was influenced by my surroundings where everyone cares about what brand you wear and how you are dressed, it naturally triggered my interest in fashion.

What is your major strength as a fashion designer?

Curiosity for garment construction details and keen insight for target market’s demand. I do have a versatility to oversee both fashion design and marketing aspects.  Observing current fashion, and determine what items to take in and take out, then combine it into my own style.

What is your fashion related experience outside of college?

I have partnered with my colleague Aaron Pharness, and worked for our clothing brand Goreboys since 2017. One of the accomplishment was we designed our own Midnight Club T-shirt and manufactured them from China and marketed our brand by merchandising them offline and online. From this experience, we were able to experience and learn more about real fashion industry. Plan and execution and overcome facing challenges have been such a valuable lesson

Do you prefer to work alone or work as a group?

I prefer working interdependently, with the people I like to work together. It motivates both party by having a common goal and interest to share together. I think it is better to work together than alone because they can give you advises and ideas those you did not think of. Moreover, everyone has their own comfortable area where they are really confident at and working as a group helps the process to be more effective and productive. For example, Illustrations and designs, I believe Aaron Pharness is the area he is much comfortable at and can do the best job. Rather than do it by myself, I will gladly ask for his help. For pattern making and marketing our brand, I am more comfortable and confident, we distribute tasks depend on where we can be best at

How did u get into the fashion industry?

Desire to create my own clothes those I would love to wear but could not find it or too expensive. Also the whole process and story behind a fine garment was intriguing.

What do you consider most when you design your collection?

I mainly focus on asking myself “is this detail functional?” and then try to come up with the pleasing appearance

What is your thought on current fashion trend?

Fashion industry is accepting the tech wear aspect and I believe it’s direction is definitely going towards durable and functional garments

What distinguish you from other competitors?

Accessible and prevalent clothing brands are different with the brand I aspire to create. We offer limited quantity release, and the quality that you can wear 1 of our jacket instead of 10 affordable jackets

What’s your ultimate goal?

To keep my life exciting everyday with the process of designing exclusive clothes and make our brand grow continuously

From perspective of marketer or designer, where do you think the direction of fashion industry is going towards?

Over consumption and fashion industry wastes have been issue not only to producers but also consumers and they are also willing to purchase a product that contributes to the less waste campaign. Oppose to over consumption phenomenon, I wanted to design and create a garment that can last and serves multi-purpose so our consumer does not have to buy another 20 Any Job experiences please tell me.

What are your inspiration or influence?

My influences are stone island and acronym they are both outstanding tech wear brands. Fabrics they use and construction details are inspiring.

What is your design process?

My partner Aaron and I discuss and come up with design and then I do start our pattern making and sew a sample to see how it fits, then keep adjust until we get our envisioned quality. At last use our carefully selected fabrics to sew the real garment

Any failure experience and what you learned from it?

I started fashion design study without any knowledge about it, and during my years of study, I faced difficult challenges and failed a lot by not achieving the quality of the work I aimed for. But I persisted through and finally I feel much confident with fashion design then beginning.

What do you want people to see/ feel when they look into your brand?

I want our brand to represent fearless fashion designers experimenting with technical fabrics and design durable and desirable garments. Not afraid of challenges and curious enough to break the orthodox rules to create a garment that is new and exclusive.
